Transforming legal case management at scale
Company
Role
Overview
MatterSpace is Google’s internal platform for tracking and managing legal cases across Alphabet globally. The platform was created to replace an outdated tool called Locker, which was difficult to use and resulted in inconsistent, incomplete legal data. Our team’s goal was to create a more intuitive system that would encourage adoption, ensure data accuracy, and streamline legal matter management.
Challenge
Legal users found Locker confusing and inefficient, leading to poor adoption and outdated case records. The core challenge was to design a new experience—MatterSpace—that simplified legal workflows, encouraged consistent use, and supported the migration of thousands of historical and ongoing legal matters without disrupting workflows.
Solution
MatterSpace was designed to offer a significantly improved user experience with simplified workflows, clearer data structures, and greater visibility into case status. We prioritized usability by testing early and often with real users, improving navigation, task flow clarity, and data input confidence. The platform was designed to integrate seamlessly with existing systems and support a wide range of legal use cases.
